Gender equality

There remains a disturbing picture of female representation in the public service. Government has established structures to promote gender equality and prompted senior female managers to contribute to increasing the number of female leaders in business.

The Women Empowerment and Gender Equality Bill will help enforce gender parity both in the private and public sectors. The Bill will ensure an equal representation in the workplace and also tackle the discrimination that women suffer on the basis of their gender.

Gender transformation is occurring at an alarmingly slow rate in both the public and private sectors, with few females holding senior posts such as CEO or managing director positions. To accelerate the slow growth rate government has introduced the Gender Equality Act.

I am heartened by the presence of so many women senior managers in the public service who represent a clear testimony that South Africa is taking the right direction to recognise women for their abilities, expertise and talents.
