A police clearance certificate is a prerequisite for employment in many occupations. Despite the introduction of the new Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), the South African Police Service (SAPS) has a backlog of over 85 000 clearance certificates.

After two years of not taking place the South African Police Service (SAPS) have announced the resumption of their police training programme.

The Police Department announced its plans to turn the current police academy in
Paarl into a police university to meet international standards. However, the
department failed to reveal its plans during the budget vote speech earlier this
year, an oversight which many are questioning.
