The October/November 2024 exams at the University of South Africa (Unisa) have ended, with thousands of students now awaiting their results.

While many will be satisfied with their performance in the 2024 Unisa exams, others may find themselves seeking alternatives or next steps if their results are not as expected.

Understanding Unisa Exam Codes

Unisa assigns specific exam codes to students' results, each indicating their outcome and the actions required. Here's what the codes mean:

  • 1: Pass – Achieved with a final mark of 50% or above.
  • 2: Pass with Distinction – Secured with a final mark of 75% or above.
  • 3: Failed – A final mark below 50%. Students must re-register for the module.
  • 5: Absent from Examination – No submission received, requiring re-registration.
  • 6: Supplementary Examination – Granted in specific circumstances, offering a second exam attempt without re-registration.
  • 7/99: Results Outstanding – Marks are pending; students can follow up from 14 December 2024.
  • 8: Not Admitted to an Examination – Criteria not met; re-registration required.
  • 24: Absent – Supplementary – Issued if the proctoring tool wasn’t used during the first exam attempt. Re-registration is necessary.
  • 28: Script Rejected – Proctoring tool not used during the second exam attempt. Re-registration is required.

When Will Unisa Release Exam Results?

Unisa has begun the staggered release of exam results. The final results will be available by 13 December 2024.

How to Request an Exam Remark or Script Copy

For students unhappy with their results, Unisa offers the option to apply for a remark of their exam scripts. The remark application period is now open and closes on 31 January 2025.

  • How to Apply for a Remark:

    • Submit your request online via myUnisa or email [email protected].
    • Remarks are only available for specific mark ranges: 35%-49% or 68%-74%.
    • Scripts flagged for academic dishonesty are not eligible for remarking.

Aegrotat Applications: Guidelines for Postgraduate Students

Unisa provides aegrotat exam provisions for postgraduate students who miss their first exam due to exceptional circumstances such as illness, bereavement, or technical issues like power cuts or internet disruptions.

Key Aegrotat Rules

  • Eligibility: Only postgraduate students are eligible.
  • Application Deadline: Applications must be submitted within 10 days of the scheduled exam date and cannot be submitted after results are released.
  • Restrictions: Aegrotats are not available for second exam opportunities.

For full details, students should refer to the "Aegrotat and Special Exams" page on Unisa’s website.

Important Notes for Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students are not eligible for aegrotats. Instead, they automatically receive two consecutive examination opportunities per module. The second attempt serves as a fallback for missed or failed first exams.

  • No Third Opportunities: Unisa will not grant a third exam opportunity for undergraduate students.
  • Re-registration: Students who miss both attempts must re-enrol for the module.

Next Steps for Students

Unisa students dissatisfied with their results have several options, from applying for a remark to utilizing supplementary examinations if eligible. For postgraduate students facing exceptional circumstances, an aegrotat application may be a viable solution.

As results are being released and deadlines approach, students are encouraged to act promptly to explore their available options and take the necessary steps toward resolving their academic concerns.
