The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has extended the application deadline for 2025 school admissions, offering relief to thousands of parents who have yet to submit applications for their children.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane revealed that technical issues with the Gauteng Online Admissions system caused downtime, preventing many parents from completing their submissions. As a result, the department decided to extend the application period.
Several parents reported difficulties in uploading and completing their applications due to the system's downtime. Although we resolved the issue parents effectively lost two days to apply, which prompted us to extend the deadline
New Deadline for Gauteng School Admissions
The new deadline for Gauteng school admissions is now 14 August 2024 at midnight, a 48-hour extension from the original closing date of 12 August 2024.
Required Documents for Gauteng School Registration
When registering your child for a public school in Gauteng, the following documents are required by the GDE:
- Parent's ID or passport
- Child's birth certificate or passport
- Proof of work address
- Latest Grade 7 school report (for Grade 8 applications)
- Immunisation report
- Proof of home address
The GDE advises parents to avoid using Internet cafes for their applications, as frequent errors and document mix-ups have complicated the admissions process. Internet cafes often fail to correctly complete the 5-Step Application Process, resulting in further issues and incomplete submissions.
The department also stresses the importance of submitting accurate documents, as all information will be verified. Parents are warned against falsifying documents, as doing so may lead to their child's placement being revoked.
GDE Admission Placement Period
The placement period for successful applications will begin on 16 September 2024 and will continue until all learners are placed. Placement offers will be sent to parents via SMS, and offers must be accepted within 7 days.
The GDE urges all parents and guardians to adhere to the guidelines and deadlines to ensure a smooth admission process for their children entering Grade 1 and Grade 8 in 2025.
