The Social Relief Distress grant was meant to come to an end in March 2022, however, President Cyril Ramaphosa extended the grant further by another year until March 2023. There is good news for qualifying SRD applicants who re-applied for the grant under its new cycle.

When the new regulation was introduced after the lifting of the National State of Disaster, SRD grant beneficiaries had been encouraged to re-apply.

Under the new regulation, the criteria had slightly changed, disqualifying those earning more than R350 per month.

According to Mpumalanga Sassa, the Customer Care Unit received numerous enquiries from beneficiaries who assumed that they will automatically qualify to be in the payment cycle from April 2022 to March 2023.

The Agency has clarified that beneficiaries who have already re-applied on the SRD website ought not to make many applications, as this confuses the system and prolongs the verification and approval phase processes.

Sassa has made an announcement, informing applicants of when they can expect to receive their grant payments under the new cycle:

Payments for the new cycle of the special COVID-19 SRD grant (from April 2022) will be paid from mid-June 2022.

Under the regulation, checks will be conducted each month to find out if the applicant still qualifies for the grant.

It is said that these checks are done by banks, using the ID number of the applicant to check whether it is linked to any bank account. This allows Sassa to find out whether the SRD grant applicant has multiple bank accounts.

With payments being done soon, beneficiaries are urged to be on the lookout for bank notifications.

Sassa is using selected retail outlets (Pick ‘n Pay, Checkers, Shoprite, Boxer, or USave) to administer funds to its clients. Social grant cards can also be used to access money at any other bank of a beneficiary's choice.
