How to Apply for Sassa Grants
Visit Your Local Sassa Office
You can apply for a grant in person by visiting the nearest Sassa office. Staff will assist you through the application process. If you are unable to apply due to illness or age, you can authorise someone to apply on your behalf.
Online Application
Sassa also offers online applications for Child Support, Older Persons, and Disability Grants.
Steps to Apply Online:
- Visit the SASSA Services Portal.
- Register as a new user or log in with your existing credentials.
- Click "Apply For A Grant" and select the type of grant you wish to apply for.
- Fill out the online application form thoroughly.
- Download and print the affidavit generated by Sassa, then have it certified by a Commissioner of Oaths.
- Print, sign, and submit the Bank Payment form along with the certified affidavit.
- Upload all required supporting documents in PDF format and submit the application.

Eligibility Criteria for Sassa Grants
To qualify for grants, applicants must meet income and asset thresholds, which vary by grant type. As of 1 October 2023, the thresholds are:

Older Persons, Disability, and War Veterans Grants:
- Asset limit: R1,247,400 (single), R2,494,800 (married).
- Income limit: R87,720/year (single), R175,440/year (married).

- Income limit: R55,200/year (single), R110,400/year (married).

Care Dependency Grant:
- Asset limit: R226,800 (single), R453,600 (married).
- This grant is not means-tested for income.

How to Apply for the SRD Grant
The Special Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant is available to individuals aged 18–59 who are unemployed and meet the income threshold. The income in their bank account must not exceed R624 per month.
Steps to Apply
- Select your citizenship status (“South African ID Holder” or “Asylum Seeker/Special Permit Holder”) on the SRD application webpage.
- Click the yellow “Click Here to Apply Online” bar.
- Enter your mobile number and verify it with the one-time pin (OTP) sent to your phone.
- Follow the prompts to complete the application process.
To qualify for the SRD Grant, applicants must be 18-59 years old, unemployed, and not exceed the income threshold of R624 in their bank account. Beneficiaries may also receive other financial assistance like NSFAS bursaries, UIF benefits, or other Sassa grants.
