The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has outlined its grant payment schedule for December 2024, addressing whether grants will be paid over the festive season.
Each month, Sassa distributes over 18 million permanent grant payments, including the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.
Additionally, around 8 million unemployed individuals in South Africa receive assistance through the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant.
Will Sassa Grants Be Paid Over the Festive Season?
Sassa's permanent grant payments for December 2024 will begin on Tuesday, 3 December, starting with Older Persons' grants. Following this, disability and children's grants will be paid during the first week of December, in line with Sassa's standard policy of disbursing payments in the first week of each month.
However, SRD grant payments for December 2024 will be made earlier than usual. While these grants are typically paid in the final week of the month, December's payments have been moved forward due to two public holidays—Christmas Day and the Day of Goodwill—that fall in the last week of the month.
December 2024 Payment Schedule

Permanent Grants:
- Older Persons' grants: From 3 December
- Disability grants: Following Older Persons' grants
- Children's grants: Paid alongside disability grants

SRD Grants:
Payments will be made between 17 December and 23 December to avoid disruptions caused by public holidays.
January 2025 Payment Schedule
For January 2025, permanent grants will resume on the following dates:
- Older Persons' grants: From 3 January
- Disability grants: From 6 January
- Children's grants: From 7 January
The two-day gap between Older Persons’ and Disability grant payments is consistent with Sassa’s policy, which does not permit payments on weekends.
Sassa has yet to confirm the payment dates for January 2025 SRD grants, but they are expected to be processed during the final week of the month.
