The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) opened applications for 2025 on 20 September 2024, providing South African students with the opportunity to secure financial aid for their tertiary education. The South African Students Congress (SASCO) welcomed the launch but expressed concerns about the ongoing administrative challenges within NSFAS.

NSFAS offers comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving students enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET colleges. To qualify for a bursary, household income must not exceed R350,000 annually (R600,000 for students with disabilities).

Student loans are available for households earning between R350,001 and R600,000.

SASCO strongly encourages all eligible young people and learners to seize this opportunity. We call on our members, chapters, and affiliated organisations to assist in spreading awareness about these application venues and to provide support to prospective applicants.

The government has announced improvements to the application process for 2025. However, SASCO remains concerned about the administrative issues that have plagued NSFAS in the past.

The student union is calling for a comprehensive audit, advanced technology, enhanced communication, a clear loan scheme framework, increased accountability, provincial offices, and university-based appeal committees to address these challenges.

These issues have caused significant distress to students, often leading to delays in funding disbursements, confusion over eligibility criteria, and in some cases, students being unable to continue their studies due to financial constraints.

SASCO expressed confidence in Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane's ability to address these critical NSFAS issues, ensuring the best interests and well-being of students.

"We believe that under Minister Nkabane's stewardship, these critical issues can be addressed effectively; prioritising the interests and well-being of students."
