The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant has been a vital support system for many South Africans. However, numerous applicants face rejection, leading to frustration and uncertainty. Knowing why your application was declined is the first step to addressing the issue effectively.

Why Your SRD Grant Application Was Rejected

Several reasons could explain why your SRD grant application for 2025 was declined:

  1. Income or Employment: Sassa may have detected employment or income tax contributions in your records.
  2. Mismatched Personal Details: Your details might not align with the Department of Home Affairs database.
  3. Other Social Grants: Applicants receiving other social grants, excluding the child grant, are ineligible.
  4. NSFAS Benefits: Beneficiaries of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme do not qualify.
  5. UIF Eligibility: If you qualify for or receive UIF benefits, your application may be rejected.
  6. Government Employment: Being employed in a government institution disqualifies you.
  7. Age Restrictions: Applicants must meet the age requirements and be under 60 years old.
  8. Deceased Records: Being listed as deceased on Home Affairs’ database results in automatic rejection.
  9. Income Threshold: Receiving more than R624 in your bank account during the application month exceeds the qualifying income limit.

Sassa spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi advises against reapplying immediately after a rejection, as the system will likely reject subsequent applications automatically.

What to Do After Rejection

If you believe your application was unfairly rejected, you can lodge an appeal instead of reapplying. The appeals process allows for a thorough review by an independent tribunal.

How to Appeal Your SRD Grant Rejection

To appeal, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the ITSAA website.
  2. Enter your South African ID number and the cell phone number used during the application.
  3. Click "Send Pin" and wait for the SMS verification code.
  4. Enter the received pin and click "Submit".
  5. Select the month for which you are appealing.
  6. Choose the reason for your appeal from the provided options.
  7. Click "Submit" to complete your appeal.

Provide all supporting documentation, such as proof of income or identity documents, to strengthen your case.

Appeal Review Process

An independent tribunal evaluates appeals to ensure fairness. If successful, you’ll receive an SMS notification. If there’s no response within 90 days, you can track your appeal status online.

Checking Your Appeal Status

To check the status of your SRD grant appeal for 2025:

  1. Visit the Sassa appeals website.
  2. Enter your ID number and cell phone number.
  3. Click "Track Appeal" to view the status.

If your appeal is unsuccessful, you may need to explore further options, such as seeking a judicial review through the High Court.

Understanding the reasons for rejection and following the correct procedures can improve your chances of accessing this critical financial support.
