The South African Revenue Services (SARS) opened the current tax-filing season on Friday 1 July 2022. Taxpayers will have until 24 October 2022 to submit their tax returns.
In some cases, taxpayers will be entitled to a tax refund. This occurs when you have paid too much tax or if taxpayers submit evidence of tax-deductible expenses. However, some individuals who were notified that they will be receiving a refund have not yet received their money.
SARS explain that they are currently processing a large volume of refunds. This has resulted in some delays in the payment of refunds to taxpayers.
“SARS is aware that some refunds may be taking a bit longer to pay than the 72 hours that we communicated in our initial correspondence to taxpayers. SARS is currently processing large volumes of refunds and we expect to have processed these refunds by next week,” explained the revenue service.
Taxpayers can file their tax returns on the SARS' eFiling website or at a SARS branch. It's important to note that you will need to make an appointment before visiting a SARS branch. They are also encouraged not to make an appointment during the first week of July.
“Taxpayers can also use SMS number 47277 to request a tax reference number, find out if you need to submit a return and get a statement of account.” explained the revenue service.
SARS are also calling on members of the public to report any suspicious activity related to the services rendered by the revenue service. You can report it to SARS via this number 0800 00 2870. This is done anonymously.
