While the Basic Conditions of Employment Act stipulates four types of regulated leave to which employees are entitled – annual leave, sick leave, family responsibility leave and parental leave – employers may choose to offer their staff various other forms of leave which are not governed by legislation.


Presenteeism, being physically present at work but mentally absent and unproductive due to illness, injury, stress or burnout, comes at a greater economic cost than absenteeism, and during the Covid-19 pandemic, it has not only increased but gone digital and virtual.

 


A recent study undertaken by IQbusiness in September 2021 found that more than 66% of office-based employees may be suffering from excessive stress, anxiety and depression. 


October 2021 is Mental Health Awareness Month, and according to the SA Society of Psychiatrists, “Mental health is the biggest threat in 2021.” When the global pandemic Covid-19 hit, it brought along the physical illness, coupled with increased mental health problems which naturally spilled over to the workplace.
