SASSA have announced that grants for older persons and those with disabilities will be paid earlier this month. All other SASSA grants will be paid on the 1st of April. It was previously announced that all NSFAS allowances would be paid as normal during the lockdown.

After different messages were being communicated by different government ministers, Police Minister Bheki Cele confirmed at a nationally-televised media briefing what was finally decided on the rules for the national 21 day lockdown to tackle the coronoavirus pandemic.

As the highly contagious Covid-19 virus continues to spread, the South African government has decided to gather a task team for stakeholders in the post-school and education training sector. The department has requested all universities and colleges to complete an updated survey on their information technology capabilities for offering online learning.

President Ramaphosa has decided that the country must, "Urgently and dramatically escalate the response to the Covid-19 challenge".

"We have learnt that those countries who acted swiftly and dramtically were successful."

Work from home

As part of South Africa’s Disaster Management Act,  strict measures have been put in place to contain the spread of the deadly Covid-19 virus and prevent local transmissions.

It is often said that the elderly and those with impaired immune systems are most at risk due to Covid-19, but small businesses are just as vulnerable, with many who are not going to survive a global economic shutdown. Seraj Toefy, Custodian of Entrepreneurship at the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) says that according to The Small Business Association, the average cash safety net for small businesses is estimated to last only 27 days.

A number of international and local companies have requested that their employees work from home due to the dire consequences of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

With some employees also opting to self-quarantine, there are a number of labour law considerations that South African businesses will have to consider.

SA Health Dept

Covid-19 - Public Service and Administration Minister Senzo Mchunu has announced the suspension and postponement of all face-to-face training by the National School of Government (NSG) with immediate effect.

SAA

South African Airways (SAA) announces the suspension of operations, regionally and internationally, in a continued effort to slow the spread of the deadly Covid-19 virus in the country.
