Countries all over the world have been affected by Covid-19. The virus was first detected in 2019 and has since caused a global pandemic.

Health care workers frustrated

The impact of misinformation about the Covid-19 vaccine is being felt in hospital wards. This has put healthcare workers in a difficult position. Doctors and nurses are having to treat people who refuse to take a potentially life-saving vaccine.

South Africa administered close to half a million vaccine doses on Monday, as the country records over 7 000 new COVID-19 infections.

The United States of America’s Food And Drug Administration (FDA) has fully authorised the Pfizer Covid-19 Vaccine. The vaccine known as the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine will now be marketed under the name Comirnaty.

Limpopo Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba has announced that engagement between government and businesses in the liquor has begun concerning vaccinations. Ramthunba believes that the engagement regarding vaccines, with the liquor industry, could benefit both the Department of Health and the Liquor traders.

The Department of Education in Northern Cape is experiencing a surge in infections in schools throughout the province. Eight schools in the province have been closed in order for contact tracing and the disinfection of the school premises.

Professor Shabir Madhi has said that it is unlikely that the Covid-19 vaccine will be made mandatory in South Africa. This comes after policies have been introduced in different parts of the world regarding vaccine passports.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has praised South African youth due to their eagerness to get the Covid-19 vaccine. He described the turnout  made by the 18-35 year-olds to get their jabs as 'impressive' in his weekly newsletter, From the Desk of the President. 

It is estimated that more than 82 000 South African children have been orphaned due to the Covid-19 pandemic and a further 94 000 children lost their primary caregiver, a recent report found. Save the Childrens SA’s Divya Naidoo explained that this could be either a parent or grandparent. She believes that this will have a long lasting impact on these children. 

Covid-19 vaccine dose

As from today, 18-34 years olds are eligible to receive the covid-19 vaccine as part of South Africa’s vaccine rollout plan. This comes 11 days before it was originally planned for this age category to receive their life saving jabs.


As countries race to inoculate citizens with Covid-19 vaccines to reach herd immunity, some countries are considering mixing different vaccines. This is due to vaccine shortages which are causing delays in countries vaccination rollout plans.
