The pandemic has affected households most households financially, leaving the most vulnerable with the need for intervention. The has been an increase of approximately R250 in food prices over the past 10 months.

 The Department of Basic Education partnered with Microsoft to provide digital skills training to 25 000 unemployed youth in South Africa, as part of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI), which created more than 300,000 job opportunities across the country. This initiative forms part of the broader announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa in October 2020 of a R100 billion fund to create 800 000 public sector jobs in the next three years.

The Department of Basic Education has confirmed that the vaccination of teachers and school staff will be starting this week. 

With the total number of school-related Covid-19 cases nearing 5000, the Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga held a media briefing over the weekend.
