Umalusi has given the Department of Basic Education the go ahead to release the matric results.

Today is the first day back at school for many learners, following the postponement of the reopening of schools.

As schools reopen on Monday, some learners remain without placements. Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said the department continues to struggle finding schools with enough space for learners.

With the new year now in progress, the Department of Basic Education has released the official school calendar for 2021.

The Department of Basic Education could be faced with a record number of dropouts as some matric learners who enrolled at the beginning of the year did not complete the school year.

Schools are expected to open on the 27th of January, but there are fears that the Department of Basic Education has not done enough to prepare schools.

Basic Education Director-General, Mathanzima Mweli held a media briefing today to discuss the progress that the department has been making with the marking of exams. Marking is taking place at 177 exam centres across the country, with all marking centres chasing the deadline of 22 January 2021.
