 The Department of Basic Education and the Department of Social Development told the Joint Portfolio Committee of both departments that the shift function of Early Childhood Development (ECD) will be implemented on 1 April 2022. This follows the announcement made by the president Cyril Ramaphosa in the 2019 State Of the Nation Address that the function would migrate from the Department of Social Development to its Education counterpart.

The results for the June/July special exams have been released by the department of Basic Education.   The May/June examinations are special exams offering an opportunity for adults who do not have their matric certificate, candidates who passed the 2020 November examinations but who want to improve upon their results and those who did not pass their final matric examinations in the previous year, to obtain their matric certificate

The Department of Basic Education is considering scrapping the October school holidays to make up for lost teaching days due to disruptions to the school calendar. The proposal by the Department of Basic Education comes after consultations with various role players in the education sector.

The Department of Basic Education has confirmed that the vaccination of teachers and school staff will be starting this week. 

With the total number of school-related Covid-19 cases nearing 5000, the Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga held a media briefing over the weekend.
