 Department of Basic Education is giving another chance to rewrite the National Senior Certificate (NSC) to candidates who did not do well in the May/June supplementary examinations. The NSC candidates, according to the department, may sign up now to write the November 2021 examination.

Covid-19 Temperature Check

Schools in Kwa-Zula Natal have seen an increase in the number of Covid-19 infections among teachers, support staff and students. The province has recorded more than 1100 reported cases in 350 schools in the past 3 weeks.

Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, has said that the October school holidays will not be scrapped despite the loss of learning time due to Covid-19. She has described the loss of learning time as concerning.

The Department of Education in Northern Cape is experiencing a surge in infections in schools throughout the province. Eight schools in the province have been closed in order for contact tracing and the disinfection of the school premises.  


A recent report found that 23 226 teenage pregnancies were reported in Gauteng between April 2020 and March 2021. Even more concerning, girls between the ages of 10 and 14 gave birth to 934 babies during this period. This has raised concern among various roleplayers in South Africa


The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has declared its concern over the amount of teaching time lost over the last two years as a result of the pandemic. The DBE believes that disruptions to learning can have long lasting effects on the lives of the pupils who are missing out on school time. 

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) deals with universities, and other post-school education and training, as well as coordinating the Human Resource Development Strategy for South Africa (HRDSSA).

The role and responsibilities for education in South Africa is shared by the Department of Education and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). The Department of Education specifically deals with all schools and grades ranging from Grade R to Grade 12, and adult literacy programmes.
