As schools reopen on Monday, some learners remain without placements. Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said the department continues to struggle finding schools with enough space for learners.

With the new year now in progress, the Department of Basic Education has released the official school calendar for 2021.

The Department of Basic Education could be faced with a record number of dropouts as some matric learners who enrolled at the beginning of the year did not complete the school year. 

The Congress of South African Students (COSAS) has threatened to shutdown private schools. This comes as the reopening of public schools was postponed by the Department of Basic Education.

The Department of Basic Education is not exactly at peace with the recent judgement to set aside the rewrite of 2 matric exam papers. 

Following the leak of 3 matric papers, the Department of Basic Education has made a tough decision for the class of 2020. Two exam papers will be rewritten, this the first national rewrite in the history of matric exams.

 Schools in Gauteng have been facing some challenges since applications opened for grade 1 and grade 8 school admissions. The online application process for 2021 has made it difficult for the department to place all learners. 

Minister Blade Nzimande has proposed a new fee agreement with public universities. He hopes the policy framework will help regulate university fees. 

Government has released a proposed calendar for 2022. The 2020 school year has been a tough year for many schools and plans are now in motion to get back lost teaching time in the next 3 years.
