Concerns have been raised regarding action the Department of Higher Education has yet to take, surrounding the chaos erupting within the system of Higher Education.


Not only has the 2023 academic year kicked off across the country, but so have student protests and demonstrations at various institutions. The Department of Higher Education says it is currently working on ways to resolve issues faced at universities. 


The Higher Education sector was one of the many aspects discussed during the much-anticipated 2023 Budget Speech. However, not everyone is approving of the planned spending stipulated by the Finance Minister during his address. 


The Higher Education sector is one of the many aspects of the much-anticipated 2023 Budget Speech, delivered today by South Africa's Finance Minister. Annually, government presents its Budget for the year, highlighting plans of expenditure for the financial year going forward. 


As public universities prepare to receive a new cohort of fresh first-years on their campuses for the 2023 academic year, Universities South Africa has assured the matric class of 2022 that they will be entering a welcoming, highly supportive and potentially life-changing environment when they join the tertiary education sector.


As South Africa’s struggle with the electricity crisis continues, the Department of Higher Education and Training is looking for solutions to lessen the impact on students enrolled in tertiary institutions. 


The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Blade Nzimande, has announced that while solutions are being developed and implemented to combat various challenges within the higher education sector, student debt is one challenge that is particularly concerning.


Some significant budget adjustments have occurred as a result of the implementation of the Special Adjustment Budget. Higher education remains unaffected, but major concerns still remain. 


Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) exams have officially started. The examination will span over the month of November, with the first test beginning on the 1st of the month. 


Higher Education, Science and Innovation Minister, Dr. Blade Nzimande, has disputed a newspaper's claims alleging that he requested to keep a Forensic Investigation Report on the National Skills Fund's (NSF) under wraps.

A new policy is in the works to differently classify higher learning institutions in South Africa into three types. However, although in discussion for a few weeks now, mixed feelings still remain. 


Two new universities will soon be built in South Africa. This will bolster the number of qualified professionals in the country and add to the 26 public universities already serving the country.

 


Four of South Africa’s public universities are featured in the top  450 universities in a globally ranked list. The ranking of the universities was based on visibility, transparency and excellence.

 


Universities are the preferred option for individuals wanting to pursue tertiary education qualifications. However, the government may downgrade universities if they do not meet their performance mandates in the coming years.

 


As the Covid-19 pandemic reached South African shores, citizens were forced to embrace a new normal. The arrival of the pandemic also demonstrated just how much education could change as the world around it evolves.

 


The high rate of young people who are unemployed, not enrolled in education or training programmes is a concern for South Africa's higher education department. The department believes that skills development is key to solving this crisis.

 


The Higher Education Department is committed to playing its role to reducing unemployment in South Africa and has announced it will provide millions in funding for community colleges to upskill adults in the country.
