As South Africa braces for the fourth wave of Covid-19 infections, could schools open later than originally planned for?

Gauteng has entered the fourth wave of Covid-19 infections. Driven by a new variant and increasing number of infections among children under the age of five has authorities concerned.

With the emergence of the Omicron Covid-19 variant, the Gauteng Education department is looking at ways to increase vaccination rate among school pupils in the province.

On Sunday, South Africa reported 687 new cases of Covid-19. Around 80% of these new cases were reported in Gauteng where 545 people contracted the virus.
