The aim of the In-situ Testing for Geotechnical and Tailings Applications course is to refresh the practicing engineer's knowledge of in situ testing and to introduce new developments. The tests will be limited to the most popular and widely used tests namely Standard Penetration Test (SPT), Cone Penetration Test (CPT), Piezocone (CPTu) and seismic tests. The test methods and procedures will be reviewed in detail. The interpretation of general strength and stiffness parameters will be discussed, as well as indirect design methods based on these parameters. Direct design methods such as Schultze and Sherif as well as Burland and Burbidge will be covered. All the flow parameters derived from the Piezocone will be discussed, including the derivation of the complete phreatic regime and the interpretation of complete as well as incomplete dissipation tests.
