ETHICS IN THE MOVIES: A FEW GOOD MEN

A FEW GOOD MEN (1992) (16VL). JHB

GENRE: War/Courtroom Drama

FILM SUMMARY: Neo-military lawyer Kaffee (Tom Cruise) defends two marines accused of murder; they contend they were acting under the orders of their superior officers Colonel Jessup (Jack Nicholson) and Lieutenant Kendrick (Kiefer Sutherland). Unfortunately, Colonel Jessup is being groomed for a position in military command and denies that he ordered a ‘code red’. To make matters worse, no one is talking. A ‘code red’ is a military term for disciplining marines outside the chain of command. Kaffee believes this to be an open and shut case and doesn’t want to ruffle any feathers. Military prosecutor Lieutenant Commander Galloway (Demi Moore) has a point to prove however.

ETHICS: In this second courtroom drama ethics@movies session, delegates will be exposed to the case as argued by prosecutors and the defense. Delegates will then pass legal judgement as an American jury would. A number of ethical frameworks will be tested in practice in yet another thrilling courtroom drama.
