ETHICS IN THE MOVIES: THE MIST

THE MIST (2007) (18VL). Cape Town

GENRE: Horror/Mystery

FILM SUMMARY: David Drayton (Thomas Jane) is forced to go to town to pick up equipment and supplies to repair his family home after a massive storm damages his home. Teaming up with his eight-year-old son Billy (Nathan Gamble) and his temperamental neighbour Brent Norton (Andre Braugher) they set out to the local hardware store, while David’s wife Stephanie (Kelly Collins Lintz) stays home to clean the mess. While in the hardware store, a strange mist engulfs the town. To their horror, the patrons in the store realise that there is something otherworldly in the mist. Cut-off from his wife, with ever growing panic in the store, David and his son are caught in a race for survival.

ETHICS: We will explore social breakdown, suicide, and the role of religion in ambiguous contexts. Prepare yourself for this rollercoaster of action, emotions and ethical dilemmas. We will ask questions about suicide and whether it is justified under certain contexts. We will also ask questions about societal breakdown and whether acting morally is still justified in such contexts.
