The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has officially confirmed the opening dates for 2026 school admission applications for Grade R, Grade 1, and Grade 8. Parents and guardians are encouraged to start preparing their applications early by gathering and certifying all required documents to ensure a smooth submission process.

Parents looking to enroll their children in Grades R, 1, and 8 for the 2026 school year can now take note of the application dates announced by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED).

WCED MEC for Education, David Maynier, confirmed:

The on-time admissions applications window for learners attending Grade R, 1 and 8 in the Western Cape in 2026 opens on Tuesday, 11 March 2025, and closes on Tuesday, 15 April 2025. 

Applications will open on 11 March 2025 for Grade R, 1 and 8 school applications and will close on 15 April 2025, in the Western Cape.

To avoid last-minute delays, parents and guardians should have all required documents ready before applying.

Required Documents for WCED School Applications

To ensure a smooth application process, parents must submit the following documents:

1. Identification Documents (Choose one)

  • South African learners: Birth certificate or ID document
  • Foreign learners: Passport OR parent’s refugee/asylum seeker permit (learner’s name must be listed)
  • Learners with foreign parents but born in SA: Handwritten birth certificate (DHA-19 form)
  • Learners born outside SA: Passport OR refugee/asylum seeker permit in their name

2. Immunization Record (for Grades R & 1 only)

  • Road to Health Chart (clinic card) or immunization card

3. Latest School Report

  • The most recent academic report from the learner’s current school

4. Proof of Residence (Choose one)

  • Rates account
  • Lease agreement
  • Affidavit from a police station confirming residence

If any required document is unavailable, parents may submit a police affidavit explaining the missing document.

How to Apply for WCED School Admissions

Follow these steps to complete your child’s application:

  1. Visit the WCED Website

    • Go to the WCED Admissions Portal
  2. Start the Application

    • Click on ‘Admissions’
    • Select ‘Admission | Grade 1 & 8’
  3. Register as a Parent/Guardian (if not registered yet)

    • Click ‘Parent Register’
    • Enter your details and create an account
  4. Log Into Your Profile

    • Enter your ID number and password
    • Click ‘Parent Login’
  5. Complete the Application

    • Click ‘Learner Application’
    • Select the Grade and answer all required questions
    • Click ‘NEW Application’
    • Fill in the application form
    • Upload required documents
    • Click ‘Submit Application’

Certified copies of documents will only need to be hand-delivered to the school once the learner receives placement.

"Parents who are not able to access the online system can receive assistance in person at their education district office, at one of our pop-up admissions sites, or at the school to which they wish to apply. We encourage parents to bring all the necessary documentation with them when seeking assistance in person," said the department.

The WCED urges parents to apply early to secure placement and help schools plan effectively for the upcoming academic year.
