COURSE OBJECTIVE

The course is designed to equip prospective mentors with the skills needed to enter a formal long-term relationship with a protégé.

  • Understanding the differences between mentoring, coaching and counselling
  • Defining roles and parameters

 

THE CHARACTERISTICS

  • Identifying the characteristics of a successful mentor
  • Understanding the importance of effective communication in the relationship
  • Identifying the characteristics of a successful protégé
  • Matching personalities for compatibility
  • The consequences of a mismatch in personalities & what to do about this

SHARING KNOWLEDGE & EXPERTISE

  • Understanding why knowledge and expertise is important in the relationship
  • Skills and techniques to be a successful mentor
  • Assessing the relationship and the

       personalities involved

SETTING GOALS & MONITORING

  • How to set goals together
  • Explaining how monitoring is going to take place
  • Drawing up schedules and progress reports
  • Giving feedback in terms of progress and achievement and the initial contract

INDIVIDUAL LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the conclusion of this course learners will…

  • Know what steps to follow when implementing the process of mentoring
  • Be aware of the interpersonal skills they must use during the relationship
  • Practice communication skills needed to foster a working mentor/protégé relationship

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA AND METHODOLOGY

  • Participation in role plays, class discussions and exercises
  • Completion of Portfolio of Evidence workbook

ENTRY LEVEL: Strictly Level 4/Grade 12/Matric.

Course is conducted in English - Grade 12 level 4.
