Do you know which Seta you are paying levies to? Are you working with the correct Seta for your company? These are important questions that every business should address.
Clarifying the issue is as simple as looking at the EMP201 form that is submitted to Sars each month. This details the Seta and the Sic code for the company. The Seta is one of 25 that cover every sector of the economy. The sic code (It stands for Standard Industry Classification) narrows things done to the key operations of your company.
If you aren't paying the Skills Development Levy each month you are breaking the law. Sars are very good at tracking down people and companies that aren't paying what is due - so we'll just leave it at that.
Is the Seta you are paying levies to the correct one for your industry? Sometimes this is an easy question; sometimes a lot harder to answer. If you are a estate agency you should be paying levies to the Services Seta. If your company manufactures food you should be registered with the Foodbev Seta.
However what if your company has two main operational functions and they are related to different Setas?
You should consider which of the functional departments has:
the greater number of employees
the greater remuneration bill
the greater need for training
So if you are paying levies to the wrong Seta what do you do about it? You should contact the Department of Labour in Pretoria at the following details:
Mr Linda Mngoma (Room 323 Laboria House) or
Mr Jeconia Sibanda (Room 320 Laboria House)
Address: Private BagX117, Pretoria, 0001
Email: linda.mngoma@labour.gov.za / jeconia.sibanda@labout.gov.za
Fax no: 012 309 4597
Furnish your SDL levy number, the new Seta and Sic code and why you would like to change. The Department will contact Sars directly and inform them of the change.
Once you have your Skills Levy ducks in a row you will be all set to participate fully in the skills development process and take advantage of the training and incentives available.
