As a parent you want to ensure that your child makes good career decisions, but how do you do that without encroaching on their ambitions?

The job market is changing rapidly and children need advice when it comes to career opportunities. As a parent you have a unique position of influence in your child's life, yet many parents don't know how to guide their children effectively.

In the video” Career Planning for your child” we look at some of the ways you can help your child make informed decisions about their careers.

Have an open dialogue

“Talk to your children positively about jobs that they have seen...”

Children who are encouraged to talk about their ideas and interests are more likely to find and do work they love. Even if your child's choice is not one that you approve of keep the lines of communication open.

Help your kids to see themselves in many different environments and professions as this removes any limitations or barriers that they might encounter later in society.

Remind your children that they have a lot to offer the world of work.

Uncover their passion

Encourage your kids to do things they are passionate about.

If children discover their passion at an early age you can help them, “...follow their dreams and hone the skill around that passion.”

This will give them the edge they need to succeed in their chosen field. It will also ensure that they do work they really enjoy.

Don't dismiss ideas

If your child suggests an unusual profession, don't disregard their suggestion.

“Rather than dismissing it think about all the related jobs that they might be able to do pursuing that dream.”

For example, not many people will reach the status of olympic swimmer but there are many job opportunities associated with this profession such as, physiotherapy, sports management or sports administration.

The secret to effective career guidance is giving your child as much information as possible, and allowing them to make the decision that bests suits their needs, interests and desires.
