In Gauteng, these are called Schools of Specialisation (SoS). They provide sector-specific skills to learners in the province.
SoS’ specialise in the teaching of Mathematics, Science and IT; Commerce and Entrepreneurship; Performing and Creative Arts; Engineering; and Sports.
Their aim is to address the skills shortages in the South African economy while simultaneously bridging the gap between Grade 12 and further education and employment. SoS also look to leverage partnerships toexpand learning opportunities so that the impact on employment is visible.
How To Apply At Schools Of Specialisation In Gauteng
- The Schools of Specialisation are available on the System for parents to apply from anywhere in the province
- Select the application option “Schools of Specialisation” to apply
- Note that your child will be required to complete an Admissions Test or Audition. Only learners who pass the test will be accepted at the school
- School feeder zones are not used for placement at a School of Specialisation

Applicants applying to Schools of Specialisation will be required to undergo admission tests, written assessments, trials or auditions from 26 May - 26 August 2022. Parents are urged to accompany their children to these tests and trials.
The outcome of these tests will be communicated to applicants from 20 June 2022 to 9 September 2022.
