At least 53 Matric learners at a school in the Gauteng East District were told not to appear for their Economics Paper 1. The learners were advised not to come to the examination venue and misdirected that there was a protest in the area.
The district was ordered to initiate a disciplinary proceeding against the principal of Phandimfundo Secondary School for these actions.
“The department will make an announcement regarding the next steps to be taken for the learners who missed examinations through no fault of their own”, said the DBE.
More than 1,100 matric candidates could not write their Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy Paper 2 due to protests in their communities. The protests affected six examination centres in Nkangala District in Mpumalanga.
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) said the affected learners in Mpumalanga will be allowed to write the affected examinations.
On Tuesday, the South African Police Service (SAPS) were deployed to the affected community and cleared roads which allowed learners to participate in their examinations.
The DBE has appealed to schools in Mpumalanga to reopen as the situation has returned to normal.
Learners at an examination centre in the North West had a delayed start to their examinations due to a community protest. However, learners were still able to complete their examinations.
The education department has called on members of the public to help protect the examinations in every way possible.
