The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, has appointed the following 12 persons as members of the fifth board of the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) to serve a five year term from 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2016.

Minister Nzimande thanked Mr Njeke and the members of the new team for making themselves available for this national service.
The SAQA board is the custodian of the integrity of our national system of qualifications.
Beyond that, SAQA and the three Quality Councils are responsible for ensuring that our integrated National Qualifications Framework continuously opens new learning and career opportunities for learners and workers.
Minister Nzimande expressed appreciation to Professor Shirley Walters, chairperson of the outgoing board, for her outstanding leadership during a difficult time of transition to new NQF legislation and a new departmental configuration. The entire board deserves thanks for maintaining course while adapting to change.
Mfundiso Johnson Ntabankulu ("JJ') Njeke, Chairperson
Mr Njeke is currently Chairperson of Silver Unicorn Trading 33, trading as Malahleni Colliery, a 100% BEE owned company. Mr Njeke has a BCom from Fort Hare University. He registered for a training contract with Hoek and Wiehahn which later became part of PricewaterhouseCoopers. He enrolled at UNISA for a BCompt (Hons) degree and two years after qualifiying as a Chartered Accountant was admitted as a partner in Umtata. He moved to Johannesburg in 1990 and obtained a Higher Diploma in Tax from the University of Johannesburg a year later. He resigned from PricewaterhouseCoopers in 1994 to become Managing Director of Kagiso Trust Investments, a position he held for over 15 years. His company board memberships have included the Kagiso Group companies, ArcelorMittal (SA), Metropolitan Holdings, N M Rothschild (SA), Resilient Property Income Fund, and MTN. He is a member of the University of Johannesburg Council. He has previously served as a member of the Katz Commission of Inquiry into Taxation and the Audit Commission, among other public bodies, and is a past chairperson of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) and its Education Committee.
Mr David Adler
Mr Adler is currently an international education consultant and evaluator. He has a BA from the University of the Witwatersrand and studied at the Johannesburg College of Education. After a period of high school teaching Mr Adler worked principally in the NGO and community-based sector as founder, board member or chairperson of many organisations. He has been Director of the South African Higher Education Trust (SACHED), Divisional Human Resource Manager with Anglo American Corporation, director of a project at Wits University for the training of leaders for the Mass Democratic Movement, founder and Consultant Director of the Community-Based Development Programme (CBDP) and National Director of the Independent Examinations Board (IEB). He was a member of the reference group on the provision of a National Qualifications Framework and spent many years as a member and Acting Chairperson of the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). He is currently a Co-Chairperson of the South African Institute for Distance Education (SAIDE).
Dr Clifford Freddie Barnes
Dr Barnes is currently Chief Executive Officer of the Northern Cape Urban Further Education and Training College. He is a qualified fitter and turner, has National Technical Diplomas in Mechanical Engineering and Workshop from Peninsula Technikon, a BA from UNISA, and BEd, MEd and PhD degrees from the University of the Free State. He has eleven years? industrial experience as an apprentice and artisan fitter and turner with Kimberley Engineering Works, and 28 years? experience at all levels in technical education, as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Divisional Head of R C Elliott Technical College, Vice-Rector of Bloemfontein College and Principal of Northern Cape Technical College. He serves on the boards of several public bodies including the Education Training and Development Practices (ETDP) SETA, and is a national executive committee member of the South African Colleges Principals? Organisation (SACPO).
Ms Chuene Thama Duba
Ms Duba is currently Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at the Durban University of Technology (DUT). She has a BSc (Education) and BSc(Hons) (Applied Mathematics) from the University of the North and a MSc (Applied Mathematics) from the University of Cape Town. She is a PhD candidate at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and was awarded a NRF/NSF South Africa/USA Exchange Scholarship to study at Michigan State University. Previously she was a Lecturer at Mokopane College of Education. Ms Duba is a part-time tutor for UNISA, a Shop Steward Committee member of the Tertiary Education National Union of South Africa (TENUSA) and an academic employee representative on the DUT Council.
Ms S Mosidi Maboye
Ms Maboye is currently Assistant Theatre Complex Manager at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital, Johannesburg. She has a Diploma in Nursing Science (Lebone), Diploma in Midwifery (Baragwanath), Diploma in Operating Theatre Nursing Science (B G Alexander College), BNursSci and Advanced Diploma in Nursing Administration (UNISA), Certificate in Health Care Management (University of Luton, England), Certificate in Recognition of Prior Learning (UNISA) and a Professional Certificate in Development and Management (Wits University). She was a Student Nurse, Enrolled Nurse and Professional Nurse at Kalafong Hospital and a Professional, Senior Professional and Chief Professional Nurse at Johannesburg General Hospital. She is Deputy General Secretary of the South African Democratic Nurses Union (SADNU) and has served one term as a member of the South African Qualifications Authority and its Executive Committee. She was appointed by the Minister of Health as a member of the Advisory Committee on the National Health Insurance.
Adv Kevin Sifiso Malunga
Adv Malunga is currently a Lecturer-in-Law in the Olive Schreiner School of Law, University of the Witwatersrand, Advocate of the High Court and Chairperson (part-time) of Quqesha Consulting. He has a BA in Law from the University of Swaziland, an LLB from the University of Natal, an LLM in International Legal Studies from the Georgetown University Law Center, and is a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Juridical Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School. Earlier he was an Audit Clerk with Coopers and Lybrand, an intern with World Vision, UK, a researcher for Save the Children Fund and a visiting researcher at the Max-Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg, Germany. He is a frequent broadcast commentator on constitutional and human rights issues.
Mr Archie Mokonane
Mr Mokonane is Manager of the Sedibeng East District - Tswinyane Adult Centre, Gauteng. He has Secondary and Further Diplomas in Education, a Diploma in Business Management, an ABET Certificate from UNISA, a BEd(Hons) from the University of Potchefstroom and a Certificate in Advocacy from the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE). He is National Chairperson of the Adult Learning Network South Africa (ALN-SA), ALN representative on ICAE, Chairperson of the Council for Adult Training and Education (CATE), and is active in the Education Training and Development Practices (ETDP) SETA and in community organisations.
Ms Nirmala Devi Moodley
Ms Moodley is currently a Learning Executive with Edcon. She has MCom and BEd degrees and several diplomas from the University of Durban Westville, and has studied strategic human resource management and business coaching at the University of Cape Town. She has many years? experience as a school counsellor, has taught at the University of Durban Westville and for 11 years has specialised in training, first with the Durban Metro and subsequently with several national companies, as industrial psychologist and human resources development manager. She has been actively engaged with a number of Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) committees and several professional bodies.
Mrs Catherine Susanna Muller
Mrs Muller is currently Senior Executive Officer of the National Professional Teachers? Organisation of South Africa (NAPTOSA) where she has worked in several professional capacities since 1999. She has a BSc from the University of Pretoria, a Higher Diploma in Education from UNISA and a BEd(Hons) from the University of Natal. She was a science teacher and head of department for fourteen years, a Senior Assistant and Deputy Superintendent of Education in the Natal and KwaZulu-Natal Education Departments, a part-time lecturer at the University of Natal, and has been Deputy Director and Director - Professional Matters at NAPTOSA. She has extensive experience in curriculum development at provincial and national level, has served on many provincial and national education committees, reference groups, task teams and professional bodies, and was a member of the Ministerial Committee for the National Education Evaluation and Development Unit (NEEDU). She has served previously on the South African Qualifications Authority and its Executive Committee.
Dr Vuyelwa Toni Penxa
Dr Penxa is currently Managing Director of IiNgcaphephe Metallurgical Services (IMS). She has a BSc, PDE and MEd from the University of the Transkei, an MSc in Science Education from the University of the Witwatersrand, a PhD in Public Affairs from the University of Pretoria, Certificates in Management of Training Institutions and in Training Policy and Curriculum Design (ILO) and Project Management (Regenesys). She has been a high school teacher, tutor at Wits University?s College of Science, Head of Department at Funda Community College and university tutor. She was a Chief Education Specialist in Further Education and Training in the Department of Education, Managing Director of Kovolavo Consulting, Director: Quality Assurance at the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), CEO of the Safety and Security SETA (SASSETA), and Managing Director of Onderstepoort Biological Products.
Professor Talvin Gregory Schultz
Professor Schultz is currently Deputy Vice Chancellor (Institutional Planning, Partnerships and Communications) at the Central University of Technology, Free State. He has a MSc in Mathematics from the University of the Western Cape, advanced studies at the Universities of Freiburg and Bieleveld in Germany and a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Stellenbosch. He has taught at the University of the Western Cape and was a Professor at the Universities of Bophutatswana, Vista and Free State. He has served as Trustee and Principal Officer of the Vista University Pension and Provident Fund and as Secretary to the Vista University Early Retirement Fund. He is a past Vice President and President of the South African Mathematical Society and has been a Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC) auditor for the Vaal University of Technology and the University of Fort Hare.
Mr Olwethu Sipuka
Mr Sipuka is currently International Campaigns and Advocacy Manager for Leonard Cheshire Southern Africa. He has a Certificate in Project Management and a National Certificate in Versatile Broadcasting from Walter Sisulu University, a Diploma in HIV/AIDS Management and Counselling from Boston College, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Disability Studies from the University of Cape Town, and is a candidate for the MPhil at UCT. He has been a trainee graphic designer, a script writer, Provincial Field Officer and National Policy Coordinator for Disabled People South Africa, and a National Youth Commissioner. He is a member of the Freedom Park Trust and several other public bodies.
