Around 10 million people rely on the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant in South Africa. The SRD grant, valued at R350 is paid monthly to beneficiaries, granted they meet the eligibility criteria.

The R350 grant, which was extended by 12 months, ensures that millions of people access some of the crucial support provided by the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa).

A study commissioned by the Department of Social Development found that 90% of grant beneficiaries used their R350 to purchase food. Food was followed by electricity as the most frequently purchased products.
