Tremendous progress is said to have been made in placing learners for the 2023 school year in the Western Cape, according to a statement released by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED).

111 616 Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners have been placed for the 2023 school year, which is 99%. They are in the process of placing the remaining 680 learners, or 1%, of Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners for the 2023 school year.

This is 50 160 more Grade 1 and 8 learners than this time last year.

The education system is still under pressure as many schools are full and they are going to struggle to place learners whose parents only apply on arrival in January next year.

MEC David Maynier has emphasized the importance of community support as this will help in ensuring that new schools and classrooms are delivered to accommodate the children in these communities.

As reported in the infrastructure update, 347 classrooms have been completed with the remaining classrooms underway.

The Rosendaal Junior High School campus is being constructed through the Rapid School Build Programme. This programme's aim is to develop and build seven schools within six months to accommodate up to 3 200 learners, while also bringing together various stakeholders.

The management, speed, cooperation and the use of new and the latest technologies are what differentiates this programme from other programmes of the same nature.

The contractors in this programme will be working through traditional holidays in order to ensure that more quality learning spaces are delivered for learners in the 2023 academic year.

A lot of progress has been made in a short period of time due to the sacrifices made by these contractors.

Premier Alan Winde has gone on to thank the contractors, their teams, colleagues in the Department and the residents of Delft for supporting this build and the construction noise going into the night.
