Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande said that a feasibility study is currently underway in the higher education sector.
This comes after the cabinet approved the establishment of two new universities. The feasibility study will determine the demand for these new institutions in identified areas or areas of interest.
“A feasibility study, funded through the Infrastructure and Efficiency Grant (IEG) to the value of R6 million, is underway to advise on the size and shape of these two institutions,” explained Nzimande.
The brand new University of Science and Innovation will be built in Ekurhuleni while a Crime Detection University will be established in Hammanskraal.
In 2020, President Cyril Ramaphosa explained that the establishment of the university in Ekurhuleni was crucial as it is the country’s only metropolitan area that does not have a university.
He said the university will enable young people in Ekurhuleni to be trained in high-impact and cutting-edge technological innovation for both current and future industries.
Nzimande added that infrastructure projects will be undertaken to establish new colleges and college campuses in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (Tvet) Colleges sector.
