A matric certificate can open the door to further study. Find out what your grade 12 pass means within the higher education landscape.
There are three levels of endorsement available to matriculants and each level gives you access to a different study option.
You need to pass at least six subjects and achieve a 30% pass in your Language of Learning and Teaching in order to qualify for the following Grade 12 endorsements.
Higher Certificate Pass
If you have received a higher certificate pass you are eligible to pursue a higher certificate in your field of choice.
This means you have achieved a 40% pass in your home language. You have also earned a 40% pass in two subjects and a 30% pass in 3 subjects.
Higher certificate courses are more practical in nature but can be achieved in a range of fields from office administration to ICT. This qualification is generally completed over one year in a private training academy or TVET college.
Visit the Skills Portal to find a training provider in your area that offers higher certificate courses.
Diploma Pass (level 3)
You must achieve at least a 40% pass mark in 4 subjects, including your home language to meet the requirements for this endorsement.
If you have a Diploma pass you qualify to study for a higher certificate or National Diploma course.
You can obtain a diploma at a college or university near you. This is usually a three year course which combines theoretical and practical education.
Bachelors Pass (level 4)
If you received a level 4 endorsement it means you achieved a 50% pass in 4 designated subjects. Only selected subjects can count towards a Bachelors Pass.
At this level you are entitled to pursue a higher certificate, diploma or bachelors degree.
Bachelor's Degree courses are typically completed at a university over a period of four years.
