Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges are a uniquely South African offering. TVET colleges were introduced to help tackle the skill shortage in the country. However, TVET colleges offer a lot more than skills and vocational based training.

You can receive a National Vocational Certificate (NCV) on Levels 2,3 and 4 which are equivalent to Grades 10, 11 and 12.

So if you are looking to complete matric you will just have to obtain an NCV Level 4 at a TVET College, which is on the same academic level as a Matric Certificate. The emphasis for an NCV qualification is however on technical skills.

The great thing about TVET colleges is that there are around 50 in South Africa’s 9 provinces. Students therefore have several TVET colleges to choose from depending on where they live.

Some courses or programmes at TVET colleges are covered by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
Having a matric certificate or an equivalent qualification could increase your prospects of finding a job or could allow you admission into a tertiary education institution.
