The Amended Senior Certificate commonly referred to as an Adult Matric, is an important qualification for South Africans who missed out on completing matric during their school years.
The Senior Certificate is equivalent to the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or matric certificate. After obtaining a SC, candidates can pursue further education at universities or TVET colleges, provided they meet the admission criteria. Additionally, many job opportunities in South Africa require a matric certificate as a basic qualification.
This programme provides adults with the opportunity to earn a matric certificate, which can open doors to better job prospects, further education, and personal growth.
Who Can Apply?
To register for the Senior Certificate, you must be 21 years or older and have completed Grade 9 or an equivalent qualification. Those who previously attempted matric but didn’t pass or want to improve their results are also eligible.
Curriculum and Subjects
The Senior Certificate follows the same curriculum as the NSC. Candidates are required to choose and complete six subjects, including:
- Two official languages (one at the Home Language level and the other at the First Additional Language level).
- Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy.
- Three elective subjects from a range of approved options.
Unlike traditional matric, the Senior Certificate is exam-only based. This means there are no continuous assessments or projects. The exams are written in May/June annually.
How to Register
Registration for the Senior Certificate typically opens in October and closes in February of the exam year.
Applicants can register through the Department of Basic Education (DBE) or private institutions that offer support for the qualification.
