The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme aims to promote teaching as a career choice by offering comprehensive financial support to individuals pursuing teaching qualifications. The bursary covers both Bachelor of Education (BEd) and Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) programmes offered at all 26 public universities in South Africa.
Applications for the Funza Lushaka Bursary for 2025 opened on 1 October 2024. There are two different Funza Lushaka applications: one for new students and one for re-applications from existing/returning bursars. They will therefore have separate deadlines.

Courses Covered by the Funza Lushaka Bursary
The bursary covers the following teaching qualifications:
- 4-year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree with specialisations in:
- Foundation Phase (Grades R – 3)
- Intermediate Phase (Grades 4 – 6)
- Senior Phase and Further Education and Training (Grades 7-12)
- 1-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) for Senior Phase and Further Education and Training (Grades 7-12)
This multi-year bursary programme supports the development of teaching professionals, focusing on priority subject areas.
Funza Lushaka Bursary Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the Funza Lushaka Bursary, applicants must be South African citizens, demonstrate strong academic performance, be 30 years old or younger, and have been accepted into an approved B.Ed. or PGCE programme with a specialisation in at least two priority subject areas.
Additionally, they must meet the minimum academic criteria for admission.
How to Submit Funza Lushaka Bursary 2025 Online Application
- Open the e-Gov portal at www.eservices.gov.za.
- Register by providing your personal details.
- Log in using the username and password created during registration.
- From the e-Services menu, select the Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme.
- Enter the OTP sent to your preferred communication channel.
- Accept the Terms and Conditions.
- On the dashboard, click the "2025 application" button.
- Complete the application by filling in all required fields.
- Accept the declaration to confirm the accuracy of your information.
What The Funza Lushaka Bursary Covers
The bursary provides funding for tuition fees, accommodation (including meals), books, and other learning materials. Additionally, a small monthly allowance may be given to cover living expenses.
