The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) confirmed that approximately nine million people are approved for SRD grant payments monthly. But how can you tell if your application for the SRD grant was successful?

How to Check Your Sassa Status
- Online Sassa Status Check
- Visit the official Sassa SRD website (https://srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status).
- Locate the "Application Status" section.
- Enter your South African ID number and the phone number you used during the application.
- Click "Check Status." You might receive a one-time PIN (OTP) via SMS.
- Enter the OTP to view your application status.
Understanding Your Sassa Status
- Pending: SRD grant applicants who receive a pending SRD Grant Status are encouraged to be patient as their SRD grant application is being reviewed
- Approved: Applicants who receive an approved SRD grant status will receive an SMS notification when your R370 grant is ready for collection at Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, or Boxer stores. Alternatively, you can choose a direct bank deposit (if applicable).
- Declined: Don't be discouraged! You have the right to appeal the decision.
Who Qualifies for the SRD Grant?
Applicants must meet criteria set by Sassa to qualify for the SRD grant including being a South African citizen, resident, or special permit holder.
They may of the grant may not receive other government support like UIF benefits or NSFAS bursaries and they must have a bank balance below R624,
Appealing a Declined Application
If the grant applicant has the eligibility criteria but their application was rejected, they can submit an appeal to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA).
Those who choose to appeal must submit a separate appeal for each month your application was rejected.
The ITSAA aims to finalise appeals within 60-90 days. Their decision is final, but applicants can request a judicial review within 180 days of receiving the ITSAA decision.
