The eThekwini Municipality has strengthened its commitment to education, innovation, and inclusive growth by renewing a groundbreaking partnership with five of South Africa’s top universities.
A new three-year Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed with the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Stellenbosch University, the University of South Africa, the Durban University of Technology, and the Mangosuthu University of Technology.
This partnership aims to develop skills, foster innovation, and create solutions to address Durban’s developmental and socio-economic challenges. Since its launch in 2011, the collaboration has been central to eThekwini’s development strategy, showcasing the power of academia and local government working together to solve real-world issues.
Mayor Cyril Xaba welcomed the renewal, describing it as a strong recommitment to the city’s transformation agenda. “This agreement is more than a renewal, it is reaffirmation of the power of collaboration, the spirit of innovation, and our shared commitment to building a better future for the city and its people,” said Xaba.
He added that by partnering with universities, the municipality is ensuring that Durban grows into a “smart, sustainable, inclusive and just” city. At the centre of this collaboration is the Municipal Institute of Learning (MILE), a platform that has positioned Durban as a global hub for municipal learning and innovation. MILE attracts researchers, academics, and thought leaders dedicated to improving urban life through shared knowledge and solutions.
According to Xaba, both the city and the universities benefit from this partnership. The institutions provide cutting-edge research and innovation, while the municipality offers opportunities for applied learning, community engagement, and measurable impact. This collaboration has also earned eThekwini national recognition, with the municipality now holding the highest number of PhD graduates of any municipality in South Africa.
Universities have pledged to continue working closely with eThekwini to co-create solutions that respond to the city’s most pressing challenges. Xaba emphasised the importance of collective action, saying: “Investing in this partnership is a powerful reminder that no single institution can solve society’s challenges alone. It is through collaboration, shared vision, and collective action that we can build a city that is resilient, equitable, and full of opportunity.”
This renewed partnership highlights the key role of higher education in shaping a smarter and more inclusive Durban, ensuring that future generations have access to opportunities built on innovation and collaboration.
