The University of South Africa (Unisa) has provided an update regarding the disbursement of National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) allowances for its students. Over 92 000 Unisa students have already received their monthly NSFAS allowance payments.

However, Unisa acknowledges that approximately 78 000 students are still awaiting their March 2025 NSFAS allowance payments. The university assures these students that their allowances are expected to be processed by the end of March 2025, contingent on several verification and administrative factors.

Last week, approximately 92 000 students received payments from Unisa. A second group, comprising about 78 000 students, will receive payments by 31 March.

Unisa has stated that students experiencing delays in receiving their NSFAS funding will be contacted directly by the university. This communication will aim to clarify any specific issues preventing the payment from being processed.

"Unisa will communicate directly with the remaining students to resolve any outstanding matters."

How Unisa Distributes NSFAS Allowances in 2025

Unisa is committed to ensuring all eligible NSFAS-funded students receive their allowances for the first six months of 2025. It's important to understand how these allowances are structured, particularly for Unisa's distance learning model:

  • Allowances Based on Study Load: The amount of your NSFAS allowance depends on the number of course credits you are registered for.
  • Learning Materials Allowance: All NSFAS students at Unisa receive a learning materials allowance. This funding is specifically intended to cover the costs of essential educational resources.
  • Incidental Allowance: In addition to the learning materials allowance, NSFAS-funded Unisa students registered for a full-time equivalent load of 10 modules will also receive an incidental allowance. This allowance provides financial support for general living expenses.
  • Part-Time Studies: Students studying fewer than 60 course credits (considered part-time) will only qualify for the NSFAS learning materials allowance.
  • Full-Time Equivalent Studies: Students enrolled in a full-time equivalent course credit load are eligible for both the learning materials allowance and the personal care allowance per academic year.

How Unisa NSFAS Allowance Payments Are Made

Unisa has confirmed that all NSFAS allowances will be paid directly into students' personal bank accounts via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). This is the standard and secure method for distributing NSFAS funding to all university students. You can expect your NSFAS allowance to be deposited directly into your designated bank account.

NSFAS allowances are paid by the institution via EFT in the student’s bank account.

Capturing Your Bank Details for NSFAS Payments

To ensure timely receipt of your Unisa NSFAS allowance, it is crucial to accurately capture your bank details. Here's how:

  1. Access the Platform: Use the unique link sent to your official myLife e-mail account.
  2. Enter Your Banking Information: Carefully input all required banking details.
  3. Await Verification: Your bank will then verify the submitted information.

Unisa emphasizes that NSFAS allowances must be paid into a bank account registered in the student's own name. This is a mandatory requirement as the bank account details will be cross-referenced against your unique Unisa student ID number for security and verification purposes.

Unisa strongly advises all students to regularly check their bank verification status to avoid any potential delays in receiving their crucial NSFAS allowance payments.

"We urge you to actively monitor the status of your submission. This will reduce delays in the disbursement of allowances, which may occur due to failed banking detail verifications."
