NSFAS Confirms 2025 Allowance Payment Plans For Universities

Universities in South Africa will welcome thousands of students for the 2025 academic. Many of these students are set to receive funding from NSFAS.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) will not disburse allowances in January 2025. Payments will begin in February, aligning with the start of the academic year for most institutions.

NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET colleges

Funding allocation to universities

NSFAS has already allocated R3.7 billion to universities in January 2025. This upfront payment, representing 10% of the total 2025 budget, aims to ensure timely allowance disbursements to students, particularly those in Health Sciences programmes.

TVET college funding

Similarly, NSFAS will provide TVET colleges with 20% of their tuition funds, exceeding R640 million, by 10 January 2025.

Allowance amounts yet to be confirmed

The specific allowance amounts for 2025 have not yet been announced. Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane is expected to reveal these figures during the state of readiness speech for the 2025 academic year.

Accurate student data crucial

Institutions are advised to submit accurate student registration data to NSFAS promptly to prevent delays in allowance payments.
