The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has recently announced the funding decisions for students who applied for NSFAS student loans. As promised, NSFAS provided details and instructions to approved students by 5 September 2024.

It is anticipated that details of all successful applicants will be shared with Institutions no later than 5 September 2024.

While NSFAS aimed to fund 31,000 loans, as of August 15, only 1,300 applicants met the eligibility criteria for the NSFAS Loan Scheme. To prioritize critical fields, the government bursary scheme will allocate 70% of the loan scheme to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs, with the remaining 30% going to Humanities and Social Sciences.

A Return to Student Loans

Until 2017, NSFAS supported students with student loans. However, in 2018, the scheme shifted to comprehensive bursaries. These bursaries covered tuition, registration fees, and allowances for food, accommodation, and learning materials.

The reintroduction of NSFAS student loans in 2024 under the Comprehensive Student Funding Model has been welcomed by many students who previously didn't qualify for government-funded bursaries. This model extends financial support to "missing middle" students who, while not qualifying for full bursaries, still face financial challenges in pursuing higher education.

Benefits of NSFAS Student Loans

NSFAS student loans offer several advantages over traditional loans. One significant benefit is the potential for up to a 50% reduction in the total repayment amount for students who achieve high academic performance.

NSFAS student loans provide a valuable opportunity for students in South Africa to access higher education. By understanding the eligibility criteria, benefits, and the government's focus on STEM fields, students can make informed decisions about their educational journey.
