NSFAS Updates Progress on 2025 Applications

NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving South African students. Thousands of students applied for funding for the 2025 academic year.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has provided an update on the progress of its 2025 application period and outlined its readiness for the upcoming academic year.

2025 NSFAS Applications

Applications for NSFAS funding opened on 20 September 2024 and will close on 15 December 2024. As of 20 November 2024, the following progress was reported:

Assessing financial and academic eligibility: 5,140
Verification of application completeness: 111,531
Application reviews for student type, SASSA status, etc.: 2,662
Provisionally funded (pending registration): 442,079
Rejected: 12,076
Appeals: 1,300
Funded: 0
Cancelled: 15,310

NSFAS has also received 18,390 loan applications for 2025.

SASSA Beneficiaries Lead Applications

Of the 465,509 applications received from SASSA beneficiaries, 428,906 were provisionally funded. Meanwhile, 142,179 applications from non-SASSA beneficiaries are still under review.

So far, 70,000 non-SASSA applications have been verified, with over 50,000 requiring additional documents. A total of 13,173 non-SASSA applicants have been provisionally funded.

Finalization of Applications

NSFAS aims to finalize all applications by 31 January 2025, after matric results are released on 14 January 2025. Applicants are advised to monitor their NSFAS status regularly for updates.

How to Check Your NSFAS Application Status

To track your application status:

Log in to the myNSFAS student portal on the official website.
Enter your username and password, then click Sign In.
Click Track Your Funding Progress to view updates.

Expanded Resources for Processing

To manage the high volume of applications, NSFAS has employed:

29 full-time staff members
183 additional staff members
50 graduates to boost capacity

Additionally, 24 servicing administrators have been deployed for two months across 76 institutions, with 10 focusing on university students and 14 on TVET College students.

This approach ensures adequate coverage and support for institutions while maintaining efficiency in processing applications.

NSFAS remains committed to providing financial aid to eligible students and ensuring the 2025 academic year starts on a strong footing.
