The University of South Africa (Unisa), South Africa's largest open distance learning institution, has re-appointed its current Principal and Vice-Chancellor, LenkaBula, for a second five-year term.
A statement released by the University said:
Council was satisfied that the process was robust, rigorous and turned out to be fair. The decision by Council is in line with the Higher Education Act 101 of 1997 in South Africa, which allows a university principal to be reappointed for a second consecutive term after their first term expires.
This decision follows a thorough review by the university council and recognizes LenkaBula's significant contributions since her appointment in 2021. As Unisa's first female leader in its 150-year history, she has overseen numerous achievements, including increased commitment from faculty, researchers, and support staff.
Focus on Student Success and Addressing Challenges
LenkaBula expressed her commitment to advancing Unisa's mission of "Shaping Africa's Intellectual Futures" and creating opportunities for both students and staff to thrive. Addressing critical issues like student debt and unemployment is a key focus.
To this end, Unisa is actively seeking partnerships with international institutions to secure scholarships for its students.
The University must be positioned in a sense that it provides solution to the 32% of unemployment and shockingly, the 45.5% of youth unemployment in our country.
Wide-Ranging Support for Reappointment
The Unisa Convocation enthusiastically welcomed LenkaBula's reappointment, citing her leadership in graduating over 58,000 students. The Unisa National Student Representative Council (NSRC) also strongly endorsed the decision, viewing it as a victory for progressive, student-centered leadership.
On behalf of the university alumni, the President of the Unisa Convocation, Mr. Justice Dabampe, fully supports, both in speech and action, the leadership of Prof. Puleng Lenkabula and her management committee in their efforts to propel the university to the top.
The NSRC emphasized its ability to collaborate with LenkaBula on student-related matters while also holding university management accountable. The council recognizes LenkaBula's prioritization of the needs of marginalized students at Unisa.
The VC’s leadership, rooted in radical praxis, has aligned with our mission of transforming the university into a space that serves the working-class majority.
