10 commandments of workplace safety

1. Everyone is responsible for their own safety AND the safety of others. Wear personal protection equipment, use the correct tools and look out for new employees. Make sure you clean up, look out for your workmates and if you see any potential dangers, speak up.
2. All accidents are preventable.
3. Follow company rules, regulations and procedures. They are there to protect you.
4. Assess the risk. Think. Don?t take chances and always be aware of what?s happening around you.
5. Be proactive about safety. Know your rights, and if you?re worried about something, speak up. Read the South African Labour Guide.
6. If you are not trained, don?t do it. Most accidents in the workplace occur when inexperienced staff operate dangerous machinery.
7. Manual handling. Manage the lift.
8. Don?t take shortcuts.
9. Good housekeeping means clearing up and keeping the workplace obstacle-free and clear.
10. Be prepared. Always have first aid kids and medical numbers handy in case of emergencies.
