In 60 days, Grade 12 learners in South Africa will participate in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. While this examination is the climax of their schooling, many will choose to enrol in tertiary education programmes and continue their academic studies.

However, the cost of tertiary education is unaffordable for many learners from disadvantaged backgrounds. There are bursaries available to these students which will enable them to achieve their academic goals.

Social investment expert Shamiso Chideme says it's important that information on bursaries are accessible to individuals around the country. Part of this includes zero-rating their websites which allows individuals without access to data access to the information.

“Just coming up with cost-effective modes of communicating that the bursary is available and obviously cost-effective modes of students and learners being able to apply for bursaries. Others won't be able to afford data so just factoring those kinds of things when doing that” explained Chideme.

They add that bursaries must not only target high-performance learners who achieved excellent results but also hard-working learners who have done enough to qualify for higher education programmes.

Chideme also called in big companies to provide comprehensive bursaries. This includes tuition fees, accommodation, laptops and a stipend. They added that physiological support is also crucial as some students may struggle to get used to the higher education environment.
