Heritage Day - the day when all South Africans are encouraged to celebrate
their cultural traditions in the wider context of the great diversity of cultures, beliefs
and traditions that make up our nation.
In an address marking Heritage Day in 1996, former president Nelson Mandela
said: "When our first democratically-elected government decided to make Heritage
Day one of our national days, we did so because we knew that our rich and varied
cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our new nation." Workforce
solutions provider Manpower South Africa Managing Director, Lyndy van den
Barselaar, notes that Heritage Day not only showcases the diversity of our nation,
but also presents an opportunity for businesses to build positive employee
relationships.
As a tradition for most South Africans, the day was also declared National Braai
Day - encouraging South Africans to braai in celebration of this day.
"Heritage Day presents an ideal opportunity to hold a company event, team building
exercise or braai, where all members of management and staff are encouraged to
bring, make or wear an item that showcases their unique culture and heritage,' says
van den Barselaar.
"Not only does this provide a platform for the team to get to know one another
better on a more personal level, but also showcases that each individual is a valued
member of the team, rather than just another employee. This reflects the true
essence of Heritage Day, by showing appreciation for how each members cultural
differences contribute something to the team.'
She explains that making employees feel connected, engaged and appreciated
will have a positive effect on the organisation?s work ethic and productivity. "A
happy team that feel integrated will work better together, having a positive effect
on the organisation?s level of productivity and motivation.'
Van den Barselaar suggests teaming up with employees to brainstorm the best
ways for your organisation to celebrate the day together. "Come up with some
objectives for what you would like to achieve for the organisation on the day. This
will make it easier for you and your team to decide on the best way to celebrate the
day, while reaching your objectives and building positive team relationships.'
