The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) will soon undertake a three-year project to digitise their 350 million Civic paper records. These records include records of births, marriages, deaths and amendments dating back to 1895.
The DHA revealed that 10 000 graduates/unemployed youth that obtained a qualification in either Information Technology or Document, Information and Records Management.
The three-year digitisation project will commence in November 2022 until October 2025. Successful applications will be paid stipends ranging from R5 000 for entry-level positions to R9 500 for Technical Support level positions and R14 250 for Manager level positions.
Minister of Home Affairs Aaron Motsoaledi said youth employed as part of the programme will be required to sign a three-year contract linked to the duration of the project.
He added that training will also be provided to the youth so they can competently perform the roles which they were employed for. This will be complemented by continuous learning and development interventions to boost the youth’s chances of employability once the programme comes to an end.
Motsoaledi says recruitment for the programme will be conducted over three phases. This will be done in collaboration with the Department of Employment and Labour.
Phase 1 -
- 2000 unemployed graduates will be recruited
- Positions will be advertised from 12 August 2022
- Begin work on 1 November 2022
Phase 2 -
- 4000 unemployed graduates will be recruited
- Positions will be advertised during October 2022
- Begin work in January 2023
Phase 3
- 5000 unemployed graduates will be recruited
- Positions will be advertised during December 2022 and January 2023
- Begin work in April 2023
Youth will be required to register and apply online through the DHA and Department of Employment and Labour websites. The labour department will allow applicants to apply at labour centres around the country.
