Online registrations for grade 1 and 8 learners at Gauteng schools officially kicked off on Thursday, 15 June 2023.
The Gauteng Education Department (GDE) says more than 161 000 applications have already been processed on day one of the 2024 online admissions periods.
The GDE announced:
As of Thursday noon, 161 407 Grade 1 and 8 applications were successfully processed by the Online Admissions System, reflecting a slight decrease compared to 2023 were we recorded over 165,000 applications made in the same time period.
Education MEC Matome Chiloane launched the 2024 online admissions at the Winterveldt Multipurpose Centre, north of Tshwane, where dozens of parents arrived to be assisted.
Chiloane says that more than 60,000 applications had been processed within the first hour of the site going live.
The department acknowledged that the system did encounter an issue where some applicants, who were applying for Grade 8, could not enter their previous schools on the system.
However, it was resolved instantly, and all previous schools are not appearing in the system for Grade 8 applicants, added Chiloane.
We are proud of the smooth start to the application period, and we are happy at the turnout of parents who used our system and succeeded in their applications.
Furthermore, he encouraged parents to take advantage of the month-long application window and submit all the required documents to the schools that they applied to within seven days after they submit their applications.

Alternatively, for those who may not have access to the internet, the department has set up more than 80 decentralised walk-in centres across the province to assist parents and guardians with submitting their applications. These decentralised walk-in centres will operate between 8 AM and 4 PM.
