Due to the extreme nature of the situation, members of the public are urged to apply for crucial relief from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa). The relief will form part of Sassa’s Social Relief of Distress (SRD).
It's important to note that SRD is separate from the R350 SRD grant that was introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Who Can Apply For SRD?
The temporary provision of assistance is meant for families who are unable to meet the most basic needs of families who are affected by a crisis or disaster.
Which SRD Is Provided By Sassa During A Crisis Or Disaster?
- Food vouchers to the value of R1 200 per family
- R1 960 x2 (3 920 per family) as food vouchers or cash to a family member who died due to the disaster/crisis.
- School uniform is provided to learners for lost uniform during the due to the disaster
- Girls R2 700 and R2 500 for boys
How To Apply To Apply For The Food Voucher
Submit your contact details to a ward councillor at your nearest municipality or to a social worker. Your application for the food voucher is processed immediately after the assessment. Once your application is approved, the voucher will be issued.
You will only receive the voucher for one month.
Sassa explained, it[s] expected that the people’s lives will normalise and the other forms of SRD including the R350 [grant] will still be available for people who are experiencing hardship”.
