The University of South Africa (Unisa) has congratulated students from the Unisa College of Accounting Sciences (CAS) after many students completed their Initial Test of Competency (ITC).
South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) has released their ITC results for June 2022 where 412 candidates successfully passed the examination. Unisa accounted for 168 of the successful students after more than 1,600 students participated in the examination.
SAICA revealed that a large percentage of African candidates who participated in the ITC examination completed their studies through accredited distance learning institutions like Unisa. They added that these providers are making a significant contribution to the accounting profession to achieve its transformation objectives.
Unisa accounted for a total of 17% of the total pass rate from January to June with the remaining 83% being shared amongst the other 18 institutions
The university says they play an important role in contributing professionals to the Chartered Accounting (CA) industry as well as driving the transformation agenda in the industry. Unisa contributed a total of 129 passes to the African (91), Coloured (6) and Indians (32) pass rates.
“Most importantly, Unisa remains the only institution with the largest number of black candidates whose socioeconomic circumstances make contact universities an elusive option,” declared the university.
The CAS added that they are in the process of appointing a dedicated ITC Course Coordinator to ensure former students are adequately prepared for their ITC examinations.
